Location Overview – Wakefield is a bustling cathedral city in West Yorkshire, located on the banks of the River Calder. It was an important market town and centre for wool, and with its position on the River Calder, it became an inland port. Wakefield is 9 miles southeast of Leeds and 28 miles southwest of York at the east of the Pennines in Calder Valley. Wakefield city centre is situated on the north bank of the river, close to a 14th-century stone bridge and a later reinforced concrete bridge built in 1929–1930. Wakefield is at the junction of major north-south routes to Sheffield, Leeds and Doncaster and west-to-east roads to Huddersfield, Dewsbury, and Pontefract. Wakefield includes the outlying villages of Alverthorpe, Belle Vue, Sandal, Portobello, Agbrigg, Lupset, Kettlethorpe and Fanshaw. Advanced Driver training across Wakefield and the surrounding areas has been carried out since 2011 for private individuals and business clients.
Our courses are bespoke to the driver’s needs, whether they are private individuals or businesses. We cover:
* Post-RTC courses
* Motorway development
* General advanced training

Each course is unique to the driver we are training, but below are some of the things we help a driver with:
* Developing a positive thinking style for safer driving
* Becoming much more speed aware and how to control speed better
* Identifying years of ingrained bad habits
* Developing transferable skills to become safer on all roads in all conditions

Wakefield has great access to the motorways at the joining of the M1 and M62 motorways, junctions 42/29, lying to the northwest, whilst the M1 to the west via junctions 39, 40 and 41. The A1 is to the east of the city. Wakefield is crisscrossed by the A61, A638, and A642 roads and is the starting point of the A636 and A650. We have helped many drivers in and around Wakefield, and our highly trained and qualified tutors are all registered with the DVSA. They will come to your address, and you can use your own car, van, or campervan for the duration of the course.
We offer full or half-day training options. We also provide multiple half-day options for those that need a more in-depth training course.
3.5hr – Popular with business clients who want to reduce the time employees are away from their duties. Also ideal as a refresher or toe-in-water for a private client who may want to go on then to book more sessions.
7hr – Designed for drivers with specific issues which need addressing, such as a lack of confidence, complaints from the public, high collision rate, or if they are moving from a car to a large van and need professional training to make the jump safely. The 7hr session can be split between two drivers, which is time and cost-efficient. One driver will be trained from 09:00 to 12:30, then the second from 13:00 to 16:30 (we can be flexible on start times). Each driver has 3.5hr each.
It tends to be private clients who opt for multiple 3.5hr sessions as they come to us with particular issues they may have, where a one-to-one training course over days or weeks is best suited to help them.
Whether you are a private client or a business customer, we can build a course based on your specific needs and requirements anywhere in the UK.

While we cover as many things as possible on this page, we understand you may still have questions. If you wish to discuss anything, please call, or email us. A member of our team will only be too pleased to help you. We can help both private individuals and business clients.
If you’re looking at a quote for a large number of drivers, we will be able to provide such, along with how we can best approach the training based on your business needs. Training large numbers requires a little extra planning, but we have many years of experience managing large, often complex driver training sessions, which involve multiple start locations and hectic diaries.
Road Safety Risks and Information – Wakefield
Wakefield is a busy and thriving city located in West Yorkshire. It is primarily served by the M1 and several fast A-road routes, such as the A638 and the A642, which enter Wakefield from the West, and the A61, which runs along the city’s Eastern edge.
The collision rates around Wakefield are very high compared to other cities of the same size; this is because it is a densely populated area and, being within 10 miles of Leeds, carries much through traffic, especially along the A650 Doncaster Road. Junction 40 of the M1 links the A368 Wakefield Road to the city centre, and it has exceptionally high collision rates, especially on the junction exit. The large Flushdyke Interchange itself also has many collision spots where poor road positioning for lane exiting may be to blame. Significant urban intersections such as these can be worrying for many drivers as being in the right lane is essential; if you struggle with this, try using a sat nav as it will help you to see your exit and be in the right lane further in advance than the road signs will show you. The A638 merges into Dewsbury Road, which runs through a highly populated residential area, and many side roads and private drives open onto the route. Some of the worst affected areas on Dewsbury Road are the stretch of road near the Dewsbury retail centre, the traffic lights at the junction of the A638 and the merging of the A642. The accident rate along this route has been very severe, and with it being such a residential area, cyclists and pedestrians have also been involved.
As the A642 travels into the city centre, the accident rates increase significantly, with some accidents being severe and life-changing. This is especially true at the junction between WestGate and Mulberry Way and the stretch of road between Drury Lane and Cheapside. These areas can be very congested at times, so it’s important to exercise patience and maintain good observational skills. This will not only help you avoid collisions but also helps to make a safer road environment for everyone. While much of Wakefield city centre is pedestrianised, the surrounding streets, such as Kirkgate and Westmoreland Street, have similar accident statistics, with many involving pedestrians. To enhance safety, consider using designated pedestrian zones and crossings, and always stay alert for vehicles, even in areas with low traffic.
If you have any specific roads you travel on in Wakefield and surrounding areas and are keen to discover if any certain parts are at higher risk of a collision, please contact us. We offer a free-of-charge service that provides detailed information on road conditions, accident history, and potential risk factors for specific roads. This service is available to anyone interested in improving their road safety knowledge.
