Cornwall is a popular destination for our advanced driving courses, thanks to its diverse and challenging road network. The majority of roads in Cornwall are rural, which inherently demands a higher level of driver skill. Unfortunately, rural roads are statistically more dangerous than main roads or motorways, primarily due to a combination of factors.
One of the key challenges on Cornwall’s rural roads is the high speed of oncoming traffic, particularly on narrow, winding lanes with little or no separation between vehicles. These roads often present unpredictable hazards such as mud, black ice, and uneven road surfaces, all of which can make driving more hazardous. The lack of clear visibility on many rural routes increases the risk, especially when encountering sharp bends or unexpected obstacles.
Our advanced driving courses are designed to help drivers navigate these challenges safely, building confidence and honing skills specific to rural driving. Whether you’re tackling tight corners or dealing with hazardous weather conditions, our tailored training can help you become a safer, more proficient driver on Cornwall’s roads.
Our advanced driving courses help make you safer on these roads, by increasing your powers of forward planning and anticipation, along with improvements to your car control.

We have helped many private and business clients in Cornwall with training, which ranges from corporate training sessions for business clients to motorhome and car training for private individuals. We have provided training in Falmouth, Truro, Redruth, St Austell, Newquay and Bodmin. We cover all areas of Cornwall and come to you for the training.
In terms of routes we take for the training, we regularly use the A30 as this spans the county of Cornwall, along with other A-roads, and plenty of B-roads too. If you are looking for motorway training and are located in Cornwall, we would recommend a full day, where we would head out to the M5 in Devon towards Plymouth.
During a session, we typically look at:
* Observation and awareness of the driving environment
* Becoming more speed aware
* Developing an improved attitude towards motoring
* How to become a more skilful driver on all types of roads
* Car control (looking at gears, steering, use of signals)
* Motoring law
* Coping and defusing with road rage
* Manoeuvres and driving in restricted areas
* Coping with bad weather
* Driving in busy urban environments
* Learning why skids happen and how to control skids
* Learning how to save fuel through economical motoring

Road Safety Risks and Information – Cornwall
Cornwall is a popular holiday destination for people from across the UK, and between April and October, the county experiences a significant increase in traffic. The fast A roads, town centres, and smaller B roads and lanes become particularly busy during the peak season. Truro, the county’s capital, along with other towns, sees heavy traffic as local businesses thrive and communities bustle with activity.
The main routes into Cornwall include the M5, which begins in the Midlands and merges into the A30, extending all the way to Penzance, as well as the A390 that runs along the coastal route from Minehead in Somerset through to Newquay. These busy roads, particularly the A30, have gained a reputation for being hazardous. The stretch between Blackwater and St Ives, in particular, has seen a higher-than-average number of fatalities and multiple collisions. Another danger zone is the A39 between Wadebridge and Davidstow, as well as the A395 from Davidstow to Launceston. While Cornwall does not have motorways, the A30 and A39 can often feel like motorway-level routes and should be approached with the same level of caution, especially during high season when traffic can be particularly congested. Visitors should always be prepared for delays, as traffic can move as slowly as 5 MPH in some hot spots.
In addition to these major routes, Cornwall is home to hundreds of rural and coastal roads, many of which are narrow, single-track lanes. These roads can become incredibly busy during the summer months, with farming communities, caravans, and motorhomes contributing to slow traffic. Given that many drivers in Cornwall will be unfamiliar with their route, extra caution should be exercised in all directions. For example, the A390 at St Anne’s Chapel has witnessed severe accidents involving multiple vehicles, resulting in tragic fatalities. Similarly, the A3083 from Helston to The Lizard has seen a number of fatal collisions over the years.
This is just a brief overview of the key collision-prone areas in Cornwall. If you’re concerned about specific routes and would like more detailed information on high-risk areas, feel free to contact us. We offer a free service to help drivers stay informed and safe on the roads.
