Training Routes in Essex:
Essex provides an excellent setting for both rural and motorway driver training, thanks to its extensive network of A and B roads. The county’s diverse roads, from busy A roads like the A414, A12, and A131 to quieter rural B roads, create the perfect environment for introducing advanced driving techniques. B-roads, such as the B1007 south of Chelmsford, are ideal for practicing car and van control, as they challenge drivers with varying corners, hidden hazards, and opportunities to apply concepts like the limit point and the IPSGA (Information, Position, Speed, Gear, and Acceleration) system.
For motorway training, Essex offers easy access to key routes such as the M11 and M25. These roads provide an excellent opportunity to introduce drivers to motorway-specific skills, an essential part of many advanced driving courses. Training on these high-speed, high-volume roads helps build confidence and prepares drivers to handle fast-moving traffic safely. Whether you’re focusing on rural roads or motorway driving, Essex’s mix of routes ensures an ideal environment to refine skills and boost driving safety awareness across various conditions.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Essex
Essex is a bustling and densely populated county offering a mix of rural, coastal, and urban roads. The county is served by several fast A roads and major routes like the M11, which runs through the west of Essex from Ilford to Cambridge.
The M11 has some particularly hazardous spots, with the worst area being at the junction where it intersects with the A120. Further towards Cambridge, the stretch between Great Chesterford and Wenden’s Ambo is another high-risk zone. Essex’s faster A roads, including the A12 (from Stratford to Colchester), A120 (from Bishops Stortford to Colchester), and A131 (from Chelmsford to Bury St Edmunds), are also areas of concern. Junctions 15 and 16 of the A12 have seen several fatal accidents in recent years, with Sandon Junction being another notable hotspot. Similarly, the A120 around Braintree has a higher-than-average number of severe collisions, including fatalities. The intersection of the A20 and A12 at Marks Tey is also known for dangerous incidents.
In the larger towns of Chelmsford and Colchester, urban road networks can be treacherous, especially during rush hour. The A1060 Rainsford Road leading into Chelmsford Centre is a particularly risky stretch, as is the B1008 through Parsonage Green. In Colchester, areas around A34 Haven Road and the junctions of St Andrews Avenue and Avon Way are frequently associated with severe accidents, including fatalities. In these urban areas, patience, awareness, and clear communication through indicators are crucial to staying safe.
Essex’s coastal and rural roads are also notorious for accidents, particularly during busy tourist seasons in the summer or adverse weather conditions in winter. Narrow B roads and country lanes can become dangerous due to floods, ice, or fallen trees. High-risk areas include the B1014 from Benfleet to Hadleigh near Southend-on-Sea and the High Street towards Great Wakering, where narrow roads have seen fatal accidents. Similarly, the rural roads between Danbury, Bradwell-on-Sea, and Burnham-on-Crouch are challenging. Reducing speed and increasing observation when driving on minor roads can significantly reduce the risks.
Inland routes such as the A1060 from Chelmsford to Hatfield Heath also carry a high risk due to its speed and the many smaller lanes that intersect with it. Most accidents here occur at these junctions, underscoring the need for heightened awareness.
This is just a small sample of accident-prone areas in Essex. If you would like more information on collision hotspots along your route, we offer a free service to help you stay informed and safe. Don’t hesitate to get in touch for guidance on accident-prone areas during your travels.
