Essex covers a wide area, and as a national provider of advanced driving courses, we are able to provide training in all areas of the county. We have already provided driver training to a large number of private and business clients in Chelmsford, Braintree, Colchester, Brentwood, Basildon and Dagenham.

For motorway training in Essex, we tend to head to the west to get on to the M11 and onto the M25 if motorway training is required, which for most courses, it usually is.

Remember – Each driving course is totally bespoke to your own specific needs and requirements. This applies to both our business and private client courses.

For rural driver training, we use Essex’s wide and diverse network of A and B roads, such as the A414, A12 and A131, as many of them lead to more challenging rural B roads. B-roads (such as the B1007, south of Chelmsford) are where we can introduce and apply car and van control techniques; the varying corners and hidden hazards provide a great backdrop to this, where we can teach things such as the limit point and IPSGA.

During our driver training  in Essex, we cover a wide range of elements, including:

  • Creating improved powers of observation and anticipation
  • Being more aware of speed limits and controlling speed
  • Looking at ways to change negative attitudes to driving
  • Create a safer way of driving on motorways, town and rural roads
  • Identifying and educating drivers about various rules of the road
  • How to identify and defuse road rage
  • Manoeuvres, parking and driving in tight spaces
  • Driving in challenging weather such as rain, snow and ice
  • Understanding the dangers of urban driving and being aware of vulnerable road users
  • Learning the difference between under, and oversteer, and how to reduce the chances of a skid occurring
  • Learning to drive in a more environmentally friendly way
  • How to anticipate the actions and potential actions of other motorists

Road Safety Risks and Information – Essex

Essex is a bustling and highly populated county in the Southeast of the UK. It has both rural and coastal routes and is served by many fast A roads and the M11, which runs to the west of the county from Ilford into Cambridge.

The M11 is fraught with dangerous hot spots, and the worst area is at the junction where the intersection joins the A120 to the M11. Further towards Cambridge, the M11 is particularly hazardous on the stretch of motorway between Great Chesterford and Wenders Ambo. The faster A roads covering Essex are the A12 from Stratford into Colchester, the A120 from Bishops Stortford into Colchester and the A131 from Chelmsford into Bury St Edmonds. Junction 15 of the A12 to Junction 16 is a particularly high-risk area and has seen several fatal collisions in the past few years. Similarly, junction 18 at Sandon is also a hotspot for accidents. The A120 is another high-speed route, and the area around Braintree is a hazardous area with more than the average collisions for such a small area; these have often been severe, with several fatalities. The intersection of the A20 to the A12 at Marks Tey is another hazardous junction.

Chelmsford and Colchester are the larger towns in Essex, and the inner-city road networks are always hazardous, especially during rush hour traffic. The A1060 Rainsford Road into Chelmsford Centre is identified as a risky area, and the B1008 through Parsonage Green is also an area for unwanted accidents. When considering the Colchester routes, the main area of worry is the A34 Haven Road and the intersection of St Andrews Avenue and Avon Way, all sadly playing host to a number of fatal collisions in recent years. Urban driving requires good patience, all-around observations and indicating in good time to show other drivers of your intentions. The B1256 crossing Braintree is another high-risk area for a small town.

Essex is both coastal and rural, and these roads can be very dangerous, especially at certain times of the year; the summer months, they may be busy with tourist traffic, and in the winter months, some minor B roads and narrow lanes can be impassable due to floods, ice or tree falls. Some of the high-risk areas are the B1014 to Benfleet from Hadleigh near Southend on Sea and the High Street towards Great Wakering; these routes have seen a number of fatal collisions on some very tight, narrow roads. The rural and coastal roads between Danbury, Bradwell on Sea and Burnham on Crouch are similarly precarious roads to travel. Having less speed and more observations will always help to minimise risk when driving on minor roads. More inland from Chelmsford to Hatfield Heath, the A1060 is very high risk as it’s a fast rural route with many smaller lanes joining it, and the accidents seen here are primarily at these intersections.

These are only a tiny sample of collision sites across Essex. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested in the accident hot spots when considering a journey. Please get in touch; we will gladly help.
