A lack of driving confidence can have a profound impact on your life. A lack of driving confidence can manifest after a specific incident, such as a near-miss or collision, or can creep up over a longer period, where a lack of exposure to driving or driving in unfamiliar situations can be key contributors.
We offer a bespoke driving course for individuals who struggle with confidence while driving. Our courses are bespoke to the needs of the driver. Specific information on this course can be found here.
For those who suffer from driving confidence issues, while some will reap huge benefits from on-road training, others prefer to, at least at the start, opt for a hypnotherapy driving course to address the subconscious issues which could be causing them this unwanted fear. In some instances, hypnotherapy can be more effective than on-road training if the issues are deeply ingrained.

Why have I developed a fear of driving?
– You may have been involved in, or witnessed, a car accident. When this happens, your brain interprets the event as a serious threat and activates your fight, flight, or freeze response to protect you from similar situations in the future.
– During childhood, we often absorb behaviours and beliefs from our parents. If a parent expressed fear or anxiety around driving, your brain may have internalised that unease, forming a negative association with being behind the wheel.
– In some cases, there’s no clear memory of a triggering event. Phobias can develop simply through imagined scenarios or unconscious fears.
– If you’ve had a panic attack while driving, your brain might have wrongly linked that distressing experience to the act of driving itself. Although the panic could have occurred anywhere, the mind now perceives driving as dangerous, reinforcing avoidance behaviour.
To keep you “safe,” your brain may trigger anticipatory anxiety, warning you that driving is a threat, even when it’s not. Over time, this creates a self-reinforcing cycle of fear, making it increasingly difficult to feel calm and confident on the road.
– Many women develop driving anxiety during Peri-Menopause. Hormonal changes during this stage can affect mood, mental clarity, and sensory sensitivity. As a result, activities like driving, which require multitasking and quick decision-making, may suddenly feel overwhelming or unsafe.
The root cause of your driving anxiety isn’t what truly matters. You don’t need to remember how or why it began in order to overcome it. In fact, many people find there’s no clear or logical explanation at all, and that’s completely normal.

“After three sessions with Ian, I am now confident to drive on motorways, something I never thought I’d be able to say” – Melanie
We have trained over 100,000 drivers since 2008 and understand the key issues surrounding driving fears. What Ian offers is something which, on its own, can cure your fear of driving, or work in partnership with an on-road confidence driving course. The hypnotherapy course is formed of three parts:
1. Consultation – We’ll talk through your goals, explain how the process works, and create a simple, effective plan to help you overcome your driving anxiety.
2. Change – We meet online and use the therapies included in your CALM DRIVE HYPNOTHERAPY package to get you feeling back in control.
3. Success – No more driving anxiety. You think clearly, feel calm, and drive with confidence — wherever the road takes you.
