Location Introduction & Overview – Burton-on-Trent is a traditional market town with a history reaching back to before the 1200s, and still to this day holds a market in the town centre every Thursday. Set in the borough of East Staffordshire close to the border with Derbyshire, Burton-on-Trent is renowned for brewing, and at its height, one-quarter of all beer sold in Britain was produced here.

The town grew up around Burton Abbey and is about 109 miles northwest of London, 30 miles northeast of Birmingham, and 23 miles east of the county town Stafford. Burton-on-Trent lies within the northern boundary of the National Forest, which welcomes thousands of visitors annually.

The town centre of Burton is placed on the western bank of the river Trent in a valley bottom, and it is the water here that makes the brewing industry so highly celebrated.

Road Networks – An excellent road network runs through Burton-on-Trent, the A38 runs from Bristol to the outskirts of Sheffield, and the A44 takes you to the West Midlands. The nearest motorway to join is the M42, which starts at Measham. Toward the west, you can join the M6 and the M1 to the east. Being a smaller town surrounded by the most charming countryside in the middle of the UK, many roads are pretty rural.

The great network of roads surrounding Burton-on-Trent is ideal for learning more driving skills and increasing confidence on all routes, including motorways. Increasingly in this area over the past few years, we have completed training in Burton on Trent, Willington and Egginton, all within easy reach of the A38 junction to the Southern Derby bypass, where we have polished many drivers’ skills with faster roads.

Most of our courses are door-to-door. There are no centres to attend, the tutor comes to you and takes you, or your drivers, out in your own vehicles, be that car, van or campervan.

Half or Full Day?

The Full-day is ideal for those with many fleet drivers who want to take advantage of the time and cost savings associated. We tend to find many business clients take the full-day sessions – and book drivers for AM and PM sessions – there is no additional charge for this, and it works well. The full day is also suitable for private drivers who wish to experience an intensive advanced driving course and want to iron out any bad habits they may have.

The Half day stand-alone sessions are ideal for just one driver or fleet drivers based across the UK, as well as being a great session for an assessment and general brush-up of your driving skills.

When we deliver driver training, we look at building the course around the individual drivers’ shortcomings. Initially, the tutor will let them drive for a short time with little input. Then after a friendly chat about the initial findings, we look at introducing advanced driving techniques and skills, such as forward planning, the system of car control, advanced observation and much more.

The central part of the course is specifically created to improve the driving demonstrated – we find the best approach is to work on their specific driving style and requirements and adjust the training to fit their needs.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Burton Upon Trent

Burton Upon Trent is a busy market town situated in East Staffordshire and has several fast A road routes serving the town. The accident rates across the town are very high in accordance with the traffic volume, and care should be taken, especially during rush hours.

The A38 links Burton Upon Trent to Birmingham and Derby, and it runs to the west of the town from the Litchfield Road and at the Branston Junction roundabout, where the Branston Road meets Parkway and the B5018. Several incidents are noted on this roundabout, possibly due to poor lane exit positioning, so good observations and clear directions are needed when using large urban roundabouts at all times. The A38 is relatively accident-free as it runs through Burton Upon Trent until it reaches the intersection of the A2151 Derby Street, which has produced many serious collisions over the past few years; this is a challenging junction and carries a high amount of traffic, so clear directions must be understood and followed. Parkway and the A5121, which merges into Wellington Road and Derby Street, travels up through Burton Upon Trent through the middle of the town from the Branston Junction. This route is shared with public transport, and the rail station is also situated along this road. It is a built-up area with housing and commercial properties. This can lead to many parked cars on the side of the road and drivers trying to join the traffic. Impatience and frustrations, especially during congested rush hours, may contribute to the numerous accidents along this route, especially near traffic lights and street junctions.

Shobnall Road crosses Burton Upon Trent across the Wellington Road roundabout, merges into the A5189, and then joins the A444 to Coventry. The Wellington Roundabout has numerous collision statistics even though it has traffic lights, which would show that lack of observations and poor lane exiting could be to blame. As with most urban routes, most accidents will occur when roads cross, so it is vital to be aware of side streets and traffic trying to join a busy road. Moor Street leading to New Street is another road with similar statistics. The A511 crosses Burton Upon Trent to the north and links Uttoxeter to Coalville; as it moves across the town, it becomes a bustling residential and retail road with many traffic lights and roundabout junctions with high accident rates.

This is a very brief outline of collisions in the Burton Upon Trent area. Please contact us if you have any specific roads you use and are keen to discover what roads are high-risk. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
