Location Introduction – Canterbury is a world-famous cathedral city situated in the heart of the City of Canterbury, in the district of Kent, and is the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Archbishop of Canterbury is the most important bishop of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion. Canterbury is a very popular tourist destination and is consistently one of the most-visited cities in the United Kingdom, the city’s economy relies heavily on tourism. Canterbury is in eastern Kent, about 55 miles east-southeast of London. Some beautiful nearby villages include Chartham, Sturry, Rough Common and Tyler Hill. The civil parish of Thanington Without is at the southwest, and the rest of the city is unparished. St Dunstan’s, St Stephen’s, Stuppington, Longport, Wincheap and Hales Place are suburbs of the city.

Canterbury lies on the banks of the river Stour flowing from its source at Lenham northeast through Ashford towards the English Channel at Sandwich. As it flows northeast, the river splits the city, one flowing through the city centre and the other surrounding the position of the former city walls. The two branches have created several river islands before joining around the area of Fordwich on the edge of the marshland northeast of Canterbury.

Our driving courses cover Canterbury with a range of elements bespoke to the driver’s needs. We provide general advanced courses, motorway training, post RTC training, pre-court courses and more.

Below are the common things we look at:

* Consider a driver’s specific day-to-day driving and driving history and make a bespoke training plan.
* Looking ahead and developing powers of observation
* Increasing focus on speed and excessive speed
* Modifying attitude towards a safer, more proactive way to drive
* Learning the System of Car Control
* How to avoid road rage situations
* Manoeuvres, reversing, and driving in confined spaces
* Driving safety on the motorway and dual carriageways
* Becoming a safer urban driver – identifying and dealing with pedestrians and cyclists

Canterbury is approximately 55 miles southeast of London, and the coastal towns of Herne Bay and Whitstable are just 6 miles to the north and Faversham 8 miles to the northwest. The A2 London bypasses Canterbury to Dover Road. It is about 45 miles from the M25 and 61 miles from central London by motorway. Another main road running through Canterbury is the A28, Ashford to Ramsgate and Margate, and in 2011, a third junction was built, linking the A28 to the A2, leaving just the A2 southbound exit. Our highly trained and experienced tutors will come to your address, home, or business, and they will take you out for training on the road using your own vehicle. This can be a car, van, campervan, or motorhome. In the last few years, we have delivered driver training in and around Canterbury, including Harbledown, Blean, Broad Oak and Bekesbourne, to name just a few areas in and around Canterbury and Kent.

Whether you are a corporate client training many drivers or if you are a private individual – we have several bespoke courses to increase the skill and safety of a driver. Our courses are available for both van and car drivers.

3.5hr –The benefit of this course is that it is the shortest duration in the range and the lowest-priced option. The disadvantage is that for some drivers, it’s too short. Ideal mainly for companies training two or more drivers.

2 x 3.5hr – This is beneficial for customers who can’t drive for a full day and want to split courses to help them absorb more over a more extended period. Often a driver gets homework in this session, so they can practice what has been covered over session one to help them with session two. Older drivers often opt for this course.

7hr full day – This can be hard work for some, but a full day is more cost-effective than 2 x 3.5 hours. It is more suitable for those who are time-poor. Maybe your company has required you to do this course, or possibly you feel a 7hr will work better for you. Talk with us if you are unsure. With business clients, we can split a full day so one driver is trained AM and then one is trained PM.

We offer longer courses for those with specific issues and offer 3, 4 and 5 x 3.5hr options. These are often taken over several weeks and are great if you have more deep-rooted issues or have not driven for a long while.

We have several training options and packages. Please call us for more information. The team member you talk with will, more often than not, manage your enquiry right through to training if that’s what you decide on doing. This includes private individuals and business customers.

If you’re looking at a quote for a large number of drivers, we will be happy to provide such, along with how we can best arrange the training based on your organisation’s specific requirements.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Canterbury

Canterbury is located in the southeast of the UK and is served by the A2 and the A28. It is set in a semi-rural area and is not far from the Kent coast, where many visitors are welcomed every year.

The M2 merges into the A2 at Faversham and skirts the western side of Canterbury, bringing a high volume of traffic to the area and onto Dover. The A2 is an exceptionally high-risk route with numerous severe and often fatal accidents, especially along the Boughton Bypass. Further into Canterbury, the A2 meets the A28, and the intersection here is quite challenging, with many collisions noted on the slip roads from both routes. Although the A28 has a traffic light system, there are still far too many accidents occurring, so extra care should be taken when using this route. When the A2 becomes Dover Road, a high number of serious accidents are noted, and this could be due to high speeds in an open rural setting, with side laybys and possibly drivers trying to join a fast carriageway. Speed is often an issue with fast rural dual carriageways, especially when the speed limit dips to 50mph in certain areas and signs need to be noticed.

The A28 links the M20 and Ashford to Margate and is a bustling route, especially during summer. As well as the extra tourist traffic flow, the A28 also has the daily commuter traffic in and out of Canterbury City. Numerous collisions are happening along this route through the City, especially at the Wincheap, Riding Gate and St Georges roundabouts, where collision rates are very high. Much of the centre of Canterbury is pedestrianised, but the smaller narrow streets, such as Rose Lane and St Georges Lane, tend to be congested and accident-prone, leading to some of the carparks serving the City. The A257 St Martins Hill travels out of Canterbury toward Sandwich and Deal, and there are many collisions here, especially along the Littlebourne Road and as it winds its way into the Village of Wingham. Another problematic route is the A290 Whitstable Road, which has many accidents, especially near the St. Dunstans Roundabout.

If you have any specific roads you travel in Canterbury and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions; please get in touch with us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
