Location Overview – Colchester is a city located in Essex and claims to be Britain’s oldest recorded town. It has been a major military base since the Romans made it their home, with Colchester Garrison presently home to the 16th Air Assault Brigade. Medieval Colchester’s prominent landmark is Colchester Castle, which is an 11th-century Norman keep built on the vaults of the old Roman temple. Many of Colchester’s parish churches date from the Tudor period.

Colchester is set on the banks of the river Colne, 50 miles northeast of London. The city is connected to London by the A12 road and is less than 20 miles from the port of Harwich London and 30 miles from Stansted Airport. Many A roads and B routes run through the city.
We provide advanced and defensive driving courses across Colchester, and in the last few years, we have trained clients in and around Beresford, Lexden, Horkesly Heath and Abbeyfields and from the city centre.
The junction at the A12 and the A120 is a perfect area to practice motorway and dual-carriageway training.
Our courses are very easy to arrange; you do not have to attend a centre, we will come to you using your own car or van and from your address.
We have several courses based on duration:
3.5-hour session – half day
7-hour session – full day (which can be split between 2 drivers)
2 x 3.5-hour sessions
3 x 3.5-hour sessions
Courses with longer durations:
Our tailored 3,4, and 5 half-day sessions are suited for those who have some specific issues with their driving, such as motorway anxiety, issues on particular roads, or for those who may not have driven for a long period of time. The longer courses are booked mainly by private customers, although they are open to our business clients with drivers who have issues.
The time in between each session will also be valuable as it allows you to reflect, absorb and practise what has been covered.

We can help both private individuals and business clients. If you want a quote for a large number of drivers, we will be able to provide such, along with how we can best approach the training based on your business needs. Training large numbers requires a little extra planning. Still, we have many years of experience in managing large, often complex driver training sessions, which involve multiple start locations and hectic diaries.
Road Safety Risks and Information – Colchester
Colchester is located in Essex on the A12 between Chelmsford and Ipswich, and it is also served by the A120 from Braintree towards Harwich at the coast. Colchester is a vibrant and bustling town with high accident rates spread across all routes throughout the area.
Junctions 25, 26 and 27 of the A12 link into Colchester via the B1408 London Road, and all of these junctions have incredibly high collision rates; many are severe and life-changing, and several have been fatal. When reaching challenging and busy intersections such as these, you must be aware of your directions and be in the correct lane for your exit, especially on busy urban roundabouts where there are several confusing exits, such as the linking of the A120 to the A12 and Station Road. The Essex Yeomanry Way roundabout at junction 26 linking the A1124 is another roundabout with a similar story to tell of high collision rates. Between junctions 26 and 27, the collision rates soar along the whole carriageway. For such a small section of dual carriageway, the accident rates here are far above the national average, and so extra caution should be taken when using the A12 near Colchester.
The London Road brings much traffic from the A12 into Colchester. It merges into the Lexden Road, which splits at Southway to circle the town centre. Along Lexden Road, numerous accidents occur, mainly when other roads cross and at traffic light junctions. The crossing of Spring Lane and Church Lane is particularly hazardous. The Oxford Road junction is another area of concern. Southway joins Headgate to form a square around the retail centre of Colchester with High St and St Botolph’s St. This route is also shared with public transport, and the narrower streets can be pretty congested, especially during rush hours. The collisions that happen in these areas are mainly found near road junctions. Although the speeds are lower in town centre streets, the accidents can still be very severe, so it is wise to be extra patient and aware when driving in busy town environments.
This is only a very brief outline of collision sites in Colchester. If you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and you’re keen to discover what parts are at higher risk in terms of collisions, please get in touch with us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
