Luton is situated on the River Lea, about 30 miles northwest of London and the town dates back to the sixth century as a Saxon outpost on the River Lea. Luton is the most populated town in the county and is 18 miles from the county towns of Hertford, 20 miles from Bedford and 29 miles from London. Luton is conveniently situated less than 30 north of the centre of London and has excellent links with the City and other parts of the country via major roads such as the M1, serving Luton from junctions 10 and 11, and the A6. The Junction of the M1 and the A1081 at Slip End is an ideal route to get to grips with motorway confidence training. Our fully tailored 3, 4 and 5 x 3.5hr sessions are suited for those who identify as having specific issues with their driving, such as driving anxiety, significant driving issues on particular roads, or who have not driven for a very long time. These longer courses are mostly booked by private individuals, although they are also open to our business clients.

These longer-duration courses are great for those facing particular (often very specific) issues, as it can take time to build up your skill and confidence. The time between each session will also be valuable as it gives you time to reflect, absorb and practise what has been covered.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Luton

The town of Luton lies on the M1 in Bedfordshire; the A5 and the A6 also serve it. It is a very busy and highly populated area with a large volume of traffic accidents noted across all routes.

The A5 links to the M1 at junction 11a, and this is a vast and challenging junction with numerous collisions shown over the last few years. This a double roundabout intersection with accident sites noted on both roundabouts but many more on the A5505 Woodside link. This may be due to poor positioning for lane exiting and last-minute panic decisions where a lack of clear indications can cause surrounding drivers to collide with hesitant motorists. It is vital that when using large urban intersections such as these that you have your directions and lane positions clear in your mind or safe driving. Junction 11 of the M1 is the link to the A505, Dunstable Road and again, this is a hazardous intersection with numerous accidents shown, a few have sadly been fatal, and many are severe and life-changing. This intersection does have a traffic light system but still, the collision rates remain high, and care should be taken in the area. The Pepperstock Interchange at junction 10 meets the A1081, and the lead up to this junction, both sides of the carriageway, is exceptionally high, with crash statistics from the start of the slip roads right into the roundabout. This suggests that poor lane positioning and high speeds could be blamed for exiting the slip roads.

The A1081 skirts the southern edge of Luton from the M1 and carries a lot of traffic to Luton Airport. London Road links from the A1081 into the centre of Luton and the London Road North Roundabout have numerous collision rates, suggesting poor lane positioning may be the main fault. London Road merges into Castle Street, crossing the A5 and into the centre of Luton. Almost every road crossing and traffic light system along this route is laden with crash sites, with the junction of Windsor Street and Hibbert Street being the worst affected. The A6 skirts the northern edge of Luton and links into the A505 creating a ring road around the town, this is also full of crash sites starting at the New Bedford Road intersection, along Crescent Road and meeting Crawley Green Road, linking back to the Windmill Road roundabout and the A505. Good observations and clear indications must always be used when driving in busy urban areas to avoid needless accidents.
