Location Overview – Winchester is a historical and exciting cathedral city and the main county town in Hampshire. It lies at the western end of the South Downs, on the River Itchen, and is only 60 miles southwest of London and 14 miles from Southampton, which is its nearest City. The more expansive City of the Winchester district includes nearby towns such as Alresford and Bishop’s Waltham. Advanced driver training across Winchester and the nearby towns has become very popular, not just for private car drivers and company van drivers but also for campervans and motorhomes, as many people are now looking to explore the rest of the UK on their holidays.
We offer a range of bespoke courses, which include:
* General advanced and defensive courses
* Motorway training
* Confidence training
* Younger drivers
* Pre-court assessments
* Performance training
* UK Familiarisation
During our bespoke driving courses, we try and cover a wide range which looks at:
* Getting an understanding of your current skills and experience
* Developing a training plan based on your or your drivers’ needs
* Identifying and removing at-risk habits
* Developing forward planning and observation
* Introducing many specialised advanced driving skills
* Getting a more in-depth understanding of your specific vehicle
* Speed awareness and speed planning
* Advanced Corners techniques
* IPSGA – The System of Car Control and how to apply it.
Reports After Training:
Each client taking driver training with us will receive a detailed driving report a few days after training. This gives a very insightful look into what was covered on the day, how the driver improved, and to what extent and in what areas. This is very important as it lets you know a driver’s skill and competency level and what they also need to work on. We take report authentication seriously, which is why each report we produce is fully documented and has its own unique verification number so that you can check back for an original copy with us. This is useful if an employer has asked an employee to take driver training.
Key learning points of our driver training:
* Work on any issues which could be impacting your level of skill and safety
* Deal with and address issues which may have been holding you back
* Become a much improved, more skilful motorist
* Demonstrate your intention to become a safer, improved driver
Training is a little different for commercial clients – the end client, the person who has the on-road training, is often not the person who decides to do the training.
While we help the driver to improve, from a commercial perspective, your business will benefit from the following:
* Potentially lower your fleet insurance costs
* Providing the opportunity for an employee to develop
* Showing you care
* Lower fuel costs
* Demonstrating your businesses Duty of Care
Winchester is surrounded by wonderful open green areas but still ideally located near the M3, uniting the A34, A31, A3090 and A272 roads. The large urban junctions of the M3, A34, and A272 are ideal areas to use during advanced driver training to improve the driver’s confidence on larger fast roads and plenty of more minor B roads to hone skills when driving rurally. We have carried out driver training in Winchester, including Abbotts Barton, Chilcomb, Twyford, Standon and Littleton. Our tutors are registered with the DVSA and specialise in delivering driver training to full licence holders. You can use your own vehicle, and we will come to your chosen address. The training will be carried out on public roads.
Whether you are a private client or a business customer, we can build a course based on your specific needs and requirements anywhere in the UK.
Our courses do vary in structure, although we have several courses based and cost on duration:
3.5hr session
7hr session (which can be split between two drivers)
2 x 3.5hr sessions
3 x 3.5hr sessions – We also have longer courses if needed.
The 7hr session, as mentioned above, can be split between two drivers, which is time and cost-efficient. One driver will be trained in the morning, usually from 9 am to 12:30, and then the second driver in the afternoon, usually from 13:00 to 16:30. We can be flexible on start times. Each driver has 3.5hr on-road training.
Longer Duration Courses:
Our bespoke 3,4, and 5 x 3.5hr sessions are suited to those with specific driving issues. These issues include driving anxiety, motorway confidence, a fear of driving in new areas after an accident to regain confidence or those that have not driven in a long time.
The longer duration courses are booked mainly by private individuals, although they are also open to our business customers.
Those who commit to these longer courses see change happen over the weeks as they build confidence and address the specific issues they may be facing.
Talk with us:
While we cover as many things as possible on this page, we understand you may still have questions. Please call or email us if you wish to discuss something. A member of our team will only be too pleased to help you. We can help both private individuals and business clients.
If you’re looking at a quote for a large number of drivers, we will be able to provide such, along with how we can best approach the training based on your business needs. Training large numbers of drivers requires extra planning, but we have many years of experience managing large, often complex driver training sessions, which involve multiple start locations and hectic diaries.
Road Safety Risks and Information – Winchester
The City of Winchester is located in Hampshire and is served by the M3 to the east. Several fast A-road routes, such as the A31 and the A390, also serve the area.
The M3 skirts the eastern edge of Winchester, and at junction 11, the intersection joins Hockley Link to St Cross Road and the City centre. This intersection is particularly hazardous with numerous collision sites on the intersection and slip roads, but the entire stretch of the M3 Motorway between junctions 12 and 9 also has higher than average crash sites noted. It is vital to have your wits about you when you are using fast, busy motorways, especially near the junction areas, as accidents can occur with other drivers struggling with directions and making silly fast moves across lanes. Junction 10 links the A31 and Bar End Road and directly into the city centre; this is a challenging double roundabout, and numerous accidents are noted, suggesting that poor lane exiting may have been to blame. If you can see a driver hesitant and struggling near such junctions, holding back and giving them space to manoeuvre rather than try to overtake and risk a collision is wise.
Much of Winchester Centre is pedestrianised, but the surrounding streets are littered with accident sites; some have been severe, and sadly, a few, fatal – even though the speed limit is much lower than a motorway; this suggests that cyclists or pedestrians have been involved in a collision with a vehicle. The B3330 travels across the northern edge of the city centre, and at the Jewry Street traffic lights, you can travel into the centre. This route is also shared with buses, so it is important not to try to overtake when stopped unless you are certain that no passenger is trying to cross the road ahead. Collisions such as these can be life-changing, if not fatal, and have often involved children. It’s crucial to remember that a moment of carelessness can have a long-term impact on your life and the lives of others.
If you have any specific roads you travel on in Winchester and surrounding areas and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk regarding collisions, please contact us. We understand the importance of your safety, which is why we offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested. This service is designed to support you and provide you with the information you need to stay safe on the roads.
