Location Overview – York is a cathedral city of Roman origin, and it is located at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire. The city has long-standing buildings and other structures, such as a minster, castle, and city walls. With the emergence of tourism, the historic core of York became one of the city’s major assets, and in 1968, it was designated a conservation area. Much of York’s economy is based on the tourist service industry, as the city benefits from excellent transport links. The city is surrounded on all sides by an outer ring road, at a distance of some 3 miles (5 km) from the city’s centre, allowing traffic through traffic to bypass the city. The street plan of the city’s historical core dates from medieval times and is unsuitable for modern traffic. Consequently, many routes inside the city walls are designated as car-free during business hours or restrict traffic entirely. There is a circular route surrounding the city with the A64 and A137, giving great access to all of Yorkshire and up Newcastle via Darlington and Durham.

Like most cities founded by the Romans, York is well served by straight trunk roads. The city lies at the intersection of the A19 from Doncaster to Tyneside, the A59 road from Liverpool to York, the A64 road from Leeds to Scarborough and the A1079 road from York to Hull. The A64 road provides the principal link to the motorway network, linking York to both the A1 and the M1 motorways at a distance of about 10 miles from the city. The trans-Pennine M62 motorway is less than 20 miles away, providing links to Manchester and Liverpool. Over the past few years, we have delivered Advanced Driver training in York and the surrounding areas for many reasons, for individual drivers with confidence issues, post RTA courses or motorway training, and for corporate fleets across York, including Dunnington, Bishopthorpe, Rawcliffe and Rufford. We will always come to you using your own vehicle, car, van, campervan or motorhome for the training.
Our courses do vary in structure, although we have a number of courses based on duration:
3.5hr session
7hr session (which can be split for 2 drivers if needed)
2 x 3.5hr sessions
We also have longer courses if needed.
Longer Duration Courses:
Our bespoke 3, 4 and 5 x 3.5hr sessions are suited, for those that identify as having specific issues with their driving, such as driving anxiety, significant driving issues on specific roads, or who have not driven for a very long time. These longer courses are mostly booked by private individuals, although they are open to our business clients too.
These longer-duration courses are great for those facing certain (often very specific) issues, as it can take time to build up your skill and confidence levels. The time in between each session will also be valuable as it gives you time to reflect, absorb and practise what has been covered.
Talk with us:
While we try to cover as many things as possible on this page, we understand you may still have questions. If you wish to discuss something, please call or email us. A member of our team will only be too pleased to help you. We can help both private individuals and business clients.
If you’re looking at a quote for a large number of drivers, we will be able to provide such, along with how we can best approach the training based on your business needs. Training large numbers requires a little extra planning, but we have many years of experience in managing large, often complex driver training sessions, which involve multiple start locations and hectic diaries.
Road Safety Risks and Information – York
York is an ancient walled city located in the northeast of the UK, and it is served by the A64 and the A59. York has thousands of visitors to the area each year, and due to this, numerous accidents have occurred involving drivers unfamiliar with the area.
The A64 meets the A1237 at the Manor Heath roundabouts. Many collisions are found at this intersection, some severe and sadly, some have been fatal, so it is vital that when using intersections such as these, you are fully aware and are in the correct position for your lane exit; this will reduce the chances of a collision drastically. It is wise to be mindful of other drivers around you who may be struggling with their exits so you can avoid them or hold back to allow them space. The Askham junction, further along the A64, links to the A1036, Tadcaster Road, and this route continues into the City Centre via Blossom Street and Micklegate. This route travels through a residential area where pedestrians, cyclists and public transport share the roads. Collisions are noted at almost every road junction and traffic light system, some have been very severe. The traffic lights at St Helens Road are a hazardous area with many accidents found, and the traffic lights at Dunnery Way and Queen Street have similar statistics; you must be fully aware of your directions and the drivers around you when driving in busy urban areas, especially during rush hours when the majority of these collisions occur. As Micklegate continues across the River Ouse at Bridge Street, the collision rates soar, with the junction of Skeldergate being especially hazardous. As York is an ancient historical city many of the roads near the centre are very narrow, which now carry much more traffic than they were initially designed to take and this is why many accidents occur, some are minor, scrapes and side windows being caught in tight areas, but they can still cause congestion in such confined areas. It is also vital that extra care is taken towards cyclists who are using the narrow routes. The A1036 Queen Street merges into Station Road and crosses the bridge to Museum Street; this is also another hazardous route with accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. This route continues to join the ring road of Lords Mayor Walk and the Foss Islands Road. At the junction of Hull Road, the A1079, extra care should be taken as this junction has seen far too many severe accidents over the past few years.
If you have any specific roads you travel in York and the surrounding areas and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk regarding collisions, please contact us. We understand the importance of your safety, which is why we offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested. This service is designed to support you and provide you with the information you need to stay safe on the roads.
