For motorway training, which either forms part or all of a course, we use the M27, A3 (M) or M3, depending on your location.
For urban driver training, if that’s to be covered on a course, we focus on busy roads in and around Southampton to help drivers become more aware of vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and help them become safer and more controlled on lower speed limit roads.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Southampton
Southampton is a large city located in Hampshire near the coast. It has a vast port that brings thousands of extra vehicles to the docks and giant cruise liners, departing and disembarking every few days. This, along with the occasional large football match, can bring much of Southampton traffic to an almost standstill on very busy days.
The main route into Southampton is via the M27, and junction 3 links the [M27] to the Redbridge Flyover and the A35 and A33; this intersection is littered with collision sites and the majority of accidents involve drivers who are unfamiliar with the area. The A33 travels to the docks and cruise terminals via the Millbrook Road West and Mountbatten Way; this route is full of hotspots for accidents, especially near the Millbrook Roundabout and the junction of West Quay Road, where some very severe and sometimes fatal accidents have occurred in the past few years. This route is especially hazardous for drivers who are unfamiliar with the area, and with thousands of other drivers driving in the same direction, there are many instances where needless collisions have occurred.
The Mayflower Roundabout links into Southampton City Centre via Town Quay and High Street, and there are numerous collision sites spread across this route, some fatal; this is a bustling route, and care should be taken to not only other drivers but also pedestrians and cyclists using the route. This route is also shared with buses, and if you are trying to overtake a parked bus, it is vital that you make sure that no passengers are trying to cross the road ahead of the bus. High Street travels up to West Street and Castle Way to the pedestrianised retail centre. Some of the hotspots to be aware of on this route are the Bargate Street Roundabout and the Portland Terrace and Ogle Road junction. Although speeds in this area are much lower than motorways or dual carriageways, the accidents have been quite severe and life-changing, suggesting that pedestrians and cyclists may have been involved. Waterloo Road and Commercial Street are areas to be extra cautious about as there are numerous accident sites along both of these roads, especially at the Roberts Road and Shirley Road junction and the junction of The Ring Road, which links to the A3024, Charlotte Place Roundabout, where again numerous accidents are noted. In busy inner-city areas, it is wise to have all your wits about you, as even though speeds are lower, minor collisions can bring the routers to a standstill.
If you have any specific roads you travel on in the Southampton area and are curious to discover what parts are at higher risk in terms of collisions; please contact us. We offer this service to anyone who is interested in improving their road safety awareness.
