Location Overview – Derby is a city in Derbyshire. It is located along the banks of the river Derwent in the East Midlands and is traditionally the county town of Derbyshire. It gained city status in 1977. The Derby built-up area covers most of the city, as well as some lovely outlying villages in the districts of Amber Valley and Erewash. Derby has a green belt area to the city’s north and east. Derby has been inhabited since Roman times and grew rapidly in the industrial era. Derby claims to be the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, and it comprises the southern part of the historical Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Our courses are bespoke to the driver’s needs, whether they are private individuals or businesses. The courses we offer range from general advanced and defensive driving courses, pre-court courses, to more specialist sessions to help a driver with confidence, motorway, post-RTC training or speed awareness.

Each course is unique, but below are some of the key things we help a driver with:

* Developing a positive mindset for driving
* Forward planning and observation
* Reviewing past driving experience and how that’s impacting a client’s approach to driving
* Being aware of the impacts excessive speed can have
* How to use speed safely
* Learning how to understand better and anticipate other road users
* How to use commentary driving to improve your powers of planning and observations
* Identifying and ironing out any at-risk habits
* Creating a positive learning environment in rural, urban and motorway settings

While a course may only last a half day, a full day, or several half days – the things you learn will last a lifetime. The report we send for each driver not only reviews their driving but also provides valuable hints and tips for the future. You can refer back to the report time and again. Each report is assigned its own unique verification number, so anyone reading it can trust its integrity as a genuine, original report – this is especially important if you have been asked to do the training from an external party such as an insurer or employer.

Derby has extensive transport links with other areas of the country. The M1 motorway passes about ten miles east of the city, linking Derby southwards to the London area and northwards to Sheffield and Leeds. Other major roads passing through Derby include the A6, the A38, the A50, the A52 and the A61.  We have carried out training in the Derby area, including Chellaston, Mackworth, Breadsall, Ockbrook and Radbourne.  Taking an advanced driver training course with us could not be any easier. The tutors will travel to a client’s address and take you out in your own car or van.

Our courses do vary in structure, although we have several courses based on duration:

* 3.5hr session
* 7hr session (which can be split for two drivers if needed)
* 2 x 3.5-hour sessions
* 3 x 3.5-hour sessions – We also have longer courses if needed.

Longer Duration Courses:

Our bespoke 3, 4, and 5 x 3.5hr sessions are suited for those who identify as having specific issues with their driving, such as driving anxiety, significant driving issues on specific roads, or who have not driven for a very long time. These longer courses are booked mainly by private individuals, although they are also open to our business clients.

These longer-duration courses are great for those facing certain (often very specific) issues, as it can take time to build up your skill and confidence. The time between each session will also be valuable as it allows you to reflect, absorb and practise what has been covered.

While we cover as many things as possible on this page, we understand you may still have questions. Please call or email us if you wish to discuss anything. A member of our team will only be too pleased to help you. We can help both private individuals and business clients.

If you’re looking at a quote for a large number of drivers, we will be able to provide such, along with how we can best approach the training based on your business needs. Training large numbers requires a little extra planning. Still, we have many years of experience managing extensive, often complex, driver training sessions involving multiple start locations and hectic diaries.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Derby

Derby is situated to the west of the M1 in Derbyshire and is primarily served by the A52 that links from the M1 into the centre of Derby via Eastgate. Derby is a bustling city with high accident statistics and several fast A road routes, such as the A38 and the A6, to navigate.

The A52 has a very challenging intersection at the meeting of Raynesway and has seen numerous accidents here and at the junction of the Sponden Roundabout and Derby Road intersection.

Poor lane exiting may be a possible cause of many of these collisions, so it is essential that you are aware of your direction when using these large urban roundabouts, as well as being aware of other drivers who may be struggling with their exits and to hold back when needed. The Pentagon Roundabout and the meeting of the A61, Sir Frank Whittle Road, Nottingham Road and Eastgate are other areas of concern, with numerous crash sites noted. The A601 links Eastgate to create a ring road around the city centre, including Bradshaw Way and Lara Croft Way, with many accidents occurring near junctions and roundabouts. These accidents mainly happen during rush hours due to a need for more patience and observation. Some of the worst affected areas are the Burton Road roundabout and the London Road roundabout.

The A6 Pride Parkway is a route that is very high with collision sites, especially near Station Approach and Siddal Road, and as it reaches Cock Pitt and Moreledge, the traffic light junctions show numerous crash sites. It is a great skill to be aware of other drivers’ intentions when driving in complicated areas such as these, as it is easy to be caught up in an accident not of your making when other drivers are not sure of their directions. Much of Derby city centre is pedestrianised, but the narrow streets surrounding the centre are rife with crash sites. Babington Lane is one of the worst, with numerous accidents occurring at the Sitwell Street junction. Another such area is Albert Street and the Corn Market junction. Uttoxeter New Street and Curzon Street are other areas of concern, with many accidents near the Stafford Street Roundabout, with the majority coming from the Mercian Way and A601 exits. Derby is a very busy city, and the accident statistics show this, so it is wise to be extra cautious when driving in the inner city area and stay alert to other drivers intentions at all times.

This is a minimal outline of collision sites in Derby. If you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions, please contact us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested.
