Location Overview – Devon is a beautiful and very popular county in Southwest England, reaching from the Bristol Channel north to the English Channel south. Cornwall borders it to the west at the River Tamar, Somerset to the northeast and Dorset. This wonderful county includes the East Devon, North Devon, Mid Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge and West Devon districts and Exeter, which is the county town of Devon. South Devon’s landscape consists of rolling hills dotted and small towns, such as Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, and Totnes. The towns of Torquay and Paignton are the top seaside resorts on the south coast. Devon is a very popular region to take advanced driver training for corporate and private customers.

Our Advanced Driver training courses cover a range of elements tailored to the driver’s needs. Here are some things we look at:

* Looking at a driver’s own specific driving and their driving history to create a bespoke training plan
* Modifying attitudes towards a safer, more proactive way to drive
* Learning the System of Car Control
* Slow manoeuvres, including driving in confined spaces and reversing
* Driving safety on motorways and dual carriageways
* Driving in a more environmentally friendly way
* Becoming a safer urban driver and identifying and dealing with pedestrians and cyclists
* Looking ahead and developing powers of observation
* How to boost your driving confidence
* Identifying high-risk driving such as driving at night, tired or when stressed
* Increasing focus on speed and excessive speed
* How to avoid road rage situations

You will be issued a driving unique report after each session – sent via email. Your report is fully documented and has a verification number attached – proof you’ve had training with a qualified professional. In your report, you will be able to see how you improved and in what areas, along with some valuable tips to ensure you keep up your improved standard of driving.

The M5 ending at Exeter is the start of the A30, and that takes you right to Cornwall and Sennen Cove and Lands End. From the A30, you can join the A38 to Plymouth or the A361 that continues to North Devon and Barnstaple, where you can join the coastal A39 route at the west of the county. We have delivered Advanced Driver training throughout Devon and the surrounding counties, including Somerset and Cornwall, and we train corporate fleet clients and private individuals wanting to improve their driving. Our tutors will come to you and take you out in your own vehicles on the road.

Our Advanced Driver training courses do vary in structure, but we have several courses based on cost and durations:

3.5 hour session
7-hour session –  split for two drivers if needed
2 x 3.5-hour sessions
3 x 3.5-hour sessions

Longer Duration Courses:

Our tailored 3, 4, and 5 x 3.5hr sessions are suited, for those with specific issues with their driving, such as driving anxiety, significant driving issues on specific roads, or who have not driven for a very long time. These longer courses are booked mainly by private individuals, although they are also open to our business clients.

These longer-duration courses are great for those facing particular (often very specific) issues, as it can take time to build up your skill and confidence. The time between each session will also be valuable as it allows you to reflect, absorb and practise what has been covered.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Devon

The M5 motorway runs from the Midlands to Exeter, merging into fast A roads such as the A30 and the A38. Devon is also full of rural roads along the east and west along the coastal routes.

Many drivers living in Devon are aware of the added traffic that the holiday seasons bring and are pretty used to traffic jams and diversions, but drivers who are unfamiliar with such locations can feel quite frustrated with them, and this is when needless accidents can occur. The M5 brings many drivers from the Midlands into Exeter, where they then travel into Devon and Cornwall via direct A road routes. Junction 29 at Exeter merges with the A30 to Honiton west and into Dorset to the east. It has many accident sites that have, at times, resulted in fatalities. This is very similar to the merging of the A30 and the A38, where the M5 ends near Exminster. The A30 into Cornwall, and the A38 to Plymouth, are high-speed routes and although they are dual-carriageways, a good understanding of motorway driving is beneficial.

The A361 reaches the north Devon coast from Tiverton and the A39 from Somerset, and both are particularly busy routes. The A361 has seen an above-average fatal collision rate, especially between South Moulton and Swimbridge. The A30 between Oakhampton and Launceston is another hazardous area. The A386 from Plymouth into Yelverton is a challenging route, littered with severe accident sites.

With the coastal routes, some very minor routes lead to holiday destinations at the seafronts, and these have also seen some needless accidents that have been quite severe, for example, the A3122 from Halwell to Dartmouth and the A379 to the seafront. Another poor area for accidents is the Newton Road and the Torbay Road in Torquay. If you are considering a UK holiday in Devon, it is wise to check where the worse accidents occur to enable the driver to remain extra cautious in such areas. Helstone and Delabole are also risky areas, especially the B3266 to Feltonadle and St Tudy. There are hundreds of minor roads and narrow lanes across Devon.

This is a minimal outline of collision sites in the county. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested.
