Location Introduction – Dundee is Scotland’s fourth-largest city, and it’s located within the eastern lowlands on the north river bank of the Firth of Tay, which flows into the North Sea. The city is divided by a line of hills stretching from Balgay Hill at the west of the city through to Dundee Law, which occupies the centre of the built-up area, to Gallow Hill between Baxter Park and the Eastern Cemetery. Dundee is a large regional employment and education centre, and many people from North East Fife, Angus Perth and Kinross commute into Dundee daily. Our advanced driver training courses have been delivered all across Dundee and the surrounding towns and villages, including Muirhead, Baldovan, Tayport and Kingoodie, since 2011.

We offer a range of bespoke courses, which include:

* General advanced and defensive courses
* Motorway training
* Performance training
* UK Familiarisation
* Confidence training
* Younger drivers
* Pre-court assessments

Course Content:

All courses are built around the needs and requirements of the individual driver, but below are several things we look at:

* The system of car control – IPSGA
* Working towards an expert level of forward planning and observation
* Understanding observational elements of driving (seeing) and building these into your driving plan
* Manoeuvres and reversing (This is often requested in confidence training)
* How to become a safe driver on urban and rural roads and motorways
* Understand your own limitations and at-risk factors – most of which you won’t be aware of
* Undoing years of ingrained bad habits
* Learning to manage speed and become more speed-aware
* How to deal with complex and busy traffic environments
* How to understand other drivers and what they may do next
* Learn how you and other drivers think when behind the wheel

You will be issued a driving report after each session – sent by email. This report is fully documented with us and has a unique verification number attached – proof you’ve had training with a qualified professional. In your report, you will be able to see how you improved and in what areas, along with some valuable tips to make sure you keep up your improved standard of driving.

Dundee has the A90, which connects the city to the M90 and to Perth to the west and Forfar and Aberdeen in the north. The part of the road through the city’s main bypass on its north side is known as the Kingsway. The east of the A90 Forfar Road junction, the Kingsway East, continues on as the A972 and joins the A92 on the Scott Fyffe roundabout. To the east, the A92 connects the city to Arbroath and Montrose and to the south with Fife via the Tay Road Bridge. Many of these routes are ones we use during parts of our driving training sessions in Dundee.

Regardless of whether you are a private client or a business customer, we can build a course based on your own specific needs and requirements anywhere in the UK.

Our courses do vary in structure, although we have a number of courses based on duration:

3.5hr session

7hr session (which can be split for two drivers if needed)

2 x 3.5hr sessions

3 x 3.5hr sessions – We also have longer courses if needed.

The 7hr session, as mentioned above, can be split between two drivers, which is time and cost-efficient. One driver will be trained in the morning, usually from 9 am to 12:30, and then the second driver in the afternoon, usually from 13:00 to 16:30. We can be very flexible with start times and start earlier than 9 am if needed. Each driver has 3.5hr on-road training.

Longer Duration Courses:

Our bespoke 3,4, and 5 x 3.5hr sessions are suited to those with specific driving issues. These issues include driving anxiety, motorway confidence, a fear of driving in new areas, post-RTC confidence or those that have not driven in a long time. These longer courses are booked mainly by private individuals, although they are also open to our business customers. Those who commit to these longer-duration courses see change happen over the weeks as they build confidence and address the specific issues they may be facing.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Dundee

Dundee is located near the coast in East Scotland and is served by the A90 and the A92. The A90 travels from Perth to Stonehaven and circles Dundee to the north of the city, and the A92 joins Dundee from Kirkcaldy and over the Tay Road Bridge and continues along the east of Dundee and up to Aberdeen along the coast.

The A90 meets the A85 Riverside Road at the Dykes of Gray Road roundabout, and several severe accidents are noted here and the slip roads onto the fast A90. Although the A90 is not technically a motorway, it is still a high-speed road, and motorway rules should be applied when driving along this route. Understanding the correct positioning for exiting and paying good attention to other drivers’ intentions will help increase your safety on such roads. The next area of concern is the Myrekirk Roundabout linking Myrekirk Road, as numerous collisions have been noted and seem to be due to poor lane exiting. The meeting of the A923 at the challenging junction of the Coupar Angus roundabout also has a high collision rate, so a great deal of care and attention should be paid when moving across such links.

The A92 joins Dundee from the Tay Road Bridge. Several accident sites are seen here as it meets the A991, East Dock Street, and these continue near every junction, traffic lights, and roundabout until it reaches the A92 again at the Scott Fyfe Roundabout. Driving in busy urban environments can be changing at the best of times, but rush hours can be particularly hazardous. Arbroath Road runs into the centre of Dundee from this roundabout and has a lot of collision sites. Again, they are centred around road crossings and junctions, suggesting a lack of observations and indications could be to blame. This is a hectic road through a residential area where many driveways open onto the road, and parking is also allocated at the side, so drivers must pay attention to any vehicle that may be pulling out onto the road.

The A991 forms a ring road around the city, and there is always the possibility of a collision when using busy roads such as these; bus routes often use them, and it can be frustrating to be stuck behind a slow bus, but overtaking can be risky especially if passengers are trying to cross the road. Many collision sites have been noted near bus stops. The city centre of Dundee is mainly pedestrianised, but the narrow streets surrounding the city can often be congested and frustrating; the accidents that occur in these areas may not be as severe due to lower speeds, but they can still be very upsetting and costly and can ked to road closures making congestion even worse.

If you have any specific roads you travel on in Dundee and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions; please get in touch with us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
