Location Overview – Farnborough is a northeast Hampshire town and part of the borough of Rushmoor. It was founded in Saxon times and is even mentioned in the Domesday Book. Napoleon III and his wife rest in the ancient Farnborough Abbey. The monks still live a simple Benedictine life, earning their living through printing, publishing, bookbinding, and the Abbey Shop, open to visitors. The town is known for its long association with aviation, with the Farnborough Airport Royal Aircraft Establishment, the Farnborough Air show, and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Farnborough is near junctions 4 and 4a of the M3. The A325 comes into the town from Frimley in the north and continues into Aldershot in the south, and the A331 runs north to south along the east side of the town. Since 2011, we have helped to train private and corporate clients around Farnborough and the areas of West Heath, Cove, Mychett and Frimley Green. The junction of the M3 and the A331 is a super area to help with motorway confidence and dealing with busy junctions, and there are some lovely countryside roads and well-laid-out urban areas to improve your driving overall.

All of our courses are based on duration:

  1. 3.5-hour session – half day
  2. 7-hour session – full day (can be split between 2 drivers)
  3. 2 x 3.5-hour sessions
  4. 3 x 3.5-hour sessions

Longer durations:

The uniquely tailored 3,4, and 5 half-day sessions are suited for those with some specific driving issues, such as motorway anxiety, on particular roads, or for those who may not have driven for a long while, even years. The longer courses are booked mainly by our private customers, but they are open to our business clients with drivers who have issues.

The time between your sessions is valuable as it affords you time to reflect, absorb and practice what has been covered in your session.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Farnborough

Farnborough is located along the M3 in Hampshire and is a busy town with numerous collision sites spread across the city. Junction 4 of the M3 and the intersection of the A331 are very challenging junctions, with many severe accidents noted, especially on the roundabouts and slip roads leading to and from the intersection, and much care should be taken when driving around this area. The majority of issues here come from poor positioning and lane exiting, where drivers may panic and make last-minute decisions, moving across lanes and causing issues for other drivers. It is vital that you are not only paying attention to your own directions in good time but also making sure that you are aware of other drivers’ intentions, especially if it looks like they may be hesitant with their directions.

The A331 travels along the eastern edge of Farnborough and down to meet the A31 running from Winchester to Guildford. This road is also fraught with accident statistics and the majority of those are found near junctions such as the meeting of the A325, Farnborough Road, and the Frimley High Street. The meeting of the Coleford Bridge Road is very similar, with many collisions noted, showing that extra care should be taken when using such busy road sections. South of Farnborough, Lynchford Road intersects the A331 at the challenging double roundabout, and numerous accidents are noted here. They continue along Lynchford Road, where St Albans Roundabout joins Queens Avenue and Alexandra Road. The Queens Roundabout joins the A325 Farnborough Road, creating a triangle of roads enclosing a large residential area of Farnborough to the east of the town centre. Numerous accidents within this area mainly occur near road crossings and traffic light junctions, showing that better observations and indications are needed in such areas. Although these incidents may not be severe due to lower speeds, they can be upsetting and costly with insurance claims, and many could have been avoided altogether with better care and attention.

The retail centre of Farnborough is mainly pedestrianised, but the streets surrounding it are shared with bus routes and car parks, and there are pretty high collision rates in specific areas such as Victoria Road, the Northmead Roundabout and the Solatron Road and Sulzers Roundabout. Driving in busy town centres can be frustrating and slow, especially during rush hours, but it is essential that you pay extra attention to pedestrians and cyclists.
