Location Overview – Lancaster is a vibrant and interesting city and is the county town of Lancashire, standing on the River Lune. The Port of Lancaster had played a significant part in the growth of the city, but for many years now, the outport of Glasson Dock to the southwest has become the main shipping facility. Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham form the Lancaster/Morecambe built-up area. The city’s name first appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086, to the Roman fort that once stood on the site. In the latter days, Lancaster has become mainly a service-oriented city. Products include animal feed, textiles, chemicals, paper, farm machinery, HGV trailers and mineral fibres. A high-tech sector has emerged from Information Technology and Communications firms also investing in the city, and in March 2004, Lancaster was granted Fairtrade City status. We have trained many drivers throughout Lancaster and the surrounding areas.
Our advanced courses cover a range of elements bespoke to the driver’s needs. Below are some of the most common driving things we look at:
* Investigating each driver’s own specific driving and driving history to make a bespoke training plan
* Modifying attitude towards a safer, more proactive way to drive
* Learning the System of Car Control
* Manoeuvres, reversing, and driving in confined spaces
* Becoming a safer urban driver – identifying and dealing with pedestrians and cyclists
* Driving safety on the motorway and dual carriageways
* Learn how to drive in a more environmentally friendly way
* Identifying high-risk driving – such as at night, driving tired or when stressed
* How to boost driving confidence
* Looking ahead and developing powers of observation
* Increasing focus on speed and excessive speed
* How to avoid road rage situations
You will be issued a driving report after each session – sent via email. The M6 motorway runs through the east of Lancaster with the junctions of 33 and 34 to the south and north. The A6 road, one of England’s main historic north-south roads, leads south to Preston, Chorley, Manchester and north to Carnforth, Kendal, Penrith, and Carlisle. It currently runs from Luton, Bedfordshire, to Carlisle, Cumbria. Passing through Lancaster gives access to nearby Carnforth, Kendal and Garstang. The Bay Gateway opened in 2016, linking Heysham and the M6 with a dual carriageway. Since 2011 Drivers Domain UK have provided advanced driver training for corporate clients with large driving fleets and private individuals who want to become the best driver they can be. We have trained many drivers across Lancaster, including Heaton, Overton, Halton, Morecombe, and Bolton Le Sands. Your chosen tutor will come to your address, home or office and take you out on the road in your own car or van.
Whether you are a corporate client training many fleet drivers or a private individual – we have several bespoke courses to increase the skill and safety of a driver.
Our courses are available for both van and car drivers.
* 3.5hr –The benefit of this course is that it is the shortest in the range and is the lowest-priced option. The disadvantage is that for some drivers, it’s too short. Ideal mainly for companies training two or more drivers.
* 2 x 3.5hr – This is beneficial for customers who can’t drive for a full day and need them split to help the driver absorb more over a more extended period. Often a driver gets homework in this session, so they can practice what has been covered in the first session to help them with next. Older drivers often opt for this course.
* 7hr full day – This can be intense and hard work for some, although a full day is cheaper than 2 half days. It’s suitable for those who are time-poor. Talk with us if you are unsure. With business clients, we can split a full day so one driver is trained AM and then one is trained PM.
* We offer longer courses for those with specific issues and offer 3, 4, and 5 options x 3.5 hours. These are often taken over several weeks and are great if you have more deep-rooted issues or have not driven for a long while.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Lancaster
Junction 33 of the M6 is the first link into Lancaster from the south, and the intersection that meets Preston Lancaster Road, A6, is a large roundabout with many collision sites noted; these could be due to poor positioning and too high speeds for the cornering of the roundabout coming from a high-speed motorway. This roundabout filters much traffic from both directions along the A6, and the narrow, almost hidden side lane of Hampson Lane has been the scene of several severe collisions when drives have come from the roundabout without looking ahead. As the A6 joins the Main Road, the traffic lights at the Salford Road and Stoney Lane junction is an area of concern with several collisions noted, very similar to most of the traffic light junctions along the entire route in the city centre. This shows that even though traffic lights are supposed to control traffic flow, drivers can still make mistakes. You should always make your own observations for safety and not rely on a green light if the way ahead is unclear. As the A6 meets the A588 at the Pointer Roundabout, three main trunk routes filter into the City centre, so the collision rates soar.
Junction 34 of the M6 links the A683 and the Caton Road, A589 that, travels into Lancaster centre from the north, there are numerous accident sites found on the slip roads but even more on the traffic light intersections at the junctions leading to them. It is vital that when driving across these areas, you are very aware of your directions and road positioning for your exits and are observing the other drivers around you; this will ensure that you can hold back if needed if you see a driver struggling with their route. Caton Road has collision sites along the entire route into the city centre, and the worst affected areas are, again, near road crossings and traffic light junctions, with the meeting of the A6 and Bulk Road being one of the high-risk areas. The junction of Cable Street and North Road has a similar story to tell. Driving in inner city areas is always pretty frustrating at the best of times, but rush hour traffic can be especially hazardous, so good observations and indications are vital at all times.
Please contact us if you have any specific roads you travel on in Lancaster and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested.
