The main roads in Southampton, some of which may be driven on during our driver training, include:
The Avenue: A major road within the city that connects different neighbourhoods and leads toward the southern parts of the city.
M27: The M27 is a major motorway that runs through the southern part of the city, connecting it to Portsmouth to the west and Eastleigh, Winchester, and beyond to the east.
A33: This road connects the city to the M3 motorway and leads north toward Winchester. It’s an important route for both local traffic and long-distance travel.
A35: This road runs through the city and connects to the A31, leading west to Bournemouth and the surrounding areas.
A3024: A key road running from the western part of the city to the city centre, linking several local areas to the main routes.
A3064: Running along the western side of the city, it connects the city centre with the western suburbs and provides access to the M27.
B3054: This road runs through the eastern part of the city, providing access to parts of the New Forest area and connecting to nearby towns.
Road Safety Risks and Information – Southampton
The main route into Southampton is via the M27, and junction 3 links the [M27] to the Redbridge Flyover and the A35 and A33; this intersection is littered with collision sites and the majority of accidents involve drivers who are unfamiliar with the area. The A33 runs to the docks and cruise terminals via Millbrook Road West and Mountbatten Way; this route has many accident hotspots, especially near the Millbrook Roundabout and the junction with West Quay Road, where some very severe and sometimes fatal accidents have occurred in the past few years. This route is especially hazardous for drivers unfamiliar with the area, and with thousands of other drivers travelling in the same direction, needless collisions have occurred on many occasions.
The Mayflower Roundabout links into Southampton City Centre via Town Quay and High Street, and numerous collision sites are spread across this route, some fatal; this is a bustling route, and drivers should take care not only for other drivers but also for pedestrians and cyclists using it. This route is also shared with buses; if you are trying to overtake a parked bus, make sure no passengers are trying to cross the road ahead of it. High Street runs up to West Street and Castle Way, then into the pedestrianised retail centre. Hotspots on this route include the Bargate Street Roundabout and the Portland Terrace and Ogle Road junction. Although speeds in this area are much lower than on motorways or dual carriageways, accidents have been severe and life-changing, suggesting pedestrians and cyclists may have been involved. Waterloo Road and Commercial Street are areas to be extra cautious about, as there are numerous accident sites along both roads, especially at the Roberts Road and Shirley Road junction and at the junction with The Ring Road, which links to the A3024, and at Charlotte Place Roundabout, where numerous accidents are also noted. In busy inner-city areas, it is wise to have all your wits about you, as even though speeds are lower, minor collisions can bring the routes to a standstill.
