Road Safety Risks and Information – Portsmouth
Portsmouth, a bustling port city and naval base, is primarily served by the M275, linking from the M27 that runs along the UK’s south coast. Its coastal location, especially during the summer months, attracts a significant influx of visitors to Portsea Island and Southsea Beach, making the roads particularly busy. This underscores the crucial need for heightened road safety awareness in Portsmouth.
Junction 12 of the M27, from the west, is a large and challenging intersection joining the M275, it also links the A27 from the A3 Southampton Road, and this intersection has numerous collision sites noted. This is the main route into Portsmouth and carries much commuter and haulage traffic in and out of the city daily and many of the accidents occur on the slip roads leading to the intersection. This can be due to excessive speed and poor lane positioning for exiting, so it is crucial to have good motorway driving skills if you use busy sections such as these on a regular basis. Understanding road positioning is paramount, especially when using multi-lane routes. A Sat Nav can be a useful tool as it can show you lanes and exits further in advance than road signs, particularly if you find motorway driving challenging. From the east, the A27 merges into the M27 and links the A3, Portsmouth Road, at the Portsbirdge Roundabout. This route merges into Kingston Road A2047 and continues down to South Parade Pier. All along these routes, you will find collision sites; many are very severe and some life-changing, and although the speed is low in these residential areas, the accidents suggest they probably involve pedestrians and cyclists. Some of the worst areas to be aware of are the traffic lights at Waverley Road and Albert Road and the Victoria New Road roundabout.
Eastern Road, A2030, leaves the Havant Bypass on the A27 and travels down the eastern side of Portsmouth towards Milton Common and the beach at Eastney. The busy intersection here is littered with collision sites, and some very serious accidents have been seen, mostly occurring on the slip roads leading to the roundabout, showing that too much speed could be to blame when leaving a fast road. Many accidents are found along Eastern Road, and several have sadly been fatal. Because of the area, many of these may involve drivers who are not familiar with the area – possibly holidaymakers. If you are local to an area that has an influx of traffic at certain times of the year, it can be frustrating, but it is vital to remain calm and allow hesitant drivers space, as this can help to avoid many accidents.
Please contact us if you have any specific roads you travel on in the Portsmouth area and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested.
