Road Safety Risks and Information – Bath

Bath is a historic and busy city that is visited by thousands of tourists year-round and has many collisions noted in the past few years that have been severe and life-changing, as well as several fatalities. It is always worth looking to see where the collision hot spots are when travelling in a new area, as this will always help you stay safer on your trip. Bath lies to the east of Bristol and is served by the A39, A46, A39 and the A4, all bustling routes with high volumes of traffic into Bath and through the area from Avon into Somerset and Dorset.

The A36 runs from Bath through to Southampton and skirts the city south of the river Avon; many accidents are noted along the route here. This is primarily the commercial area of the Bath, and there are many junctions along the route, with several traffic light junctions where most of the collisions occur. Many occur around the Westmoreland Road junction, Midland Bridge Road and Brook Road traffic lights. The A4, Newbridge Road and Upper Bristol Road nearer the city centre are both high in accident rates, and these occur during rush hours; they are less severe due to lower speeds as they are 30mph streets, but still, they are upsetting and costly and can lead to further congestion and frustration. The A367 Wells Road travels into Bath over the Churchill Bridge and forms part of a one-way system around the centre of Bath, which can be challenging for drivers who are unfamiliar with the area. This route has many traffic light junctions and numerous accident sites.

The A46 comes into Bath from the east along the London Road, where it merges into the A4 and the A3039, where it becomes the other part of the one-way system circling Bath City centre, where collision sites are numerous. As Bath is a historic city, there is little chance that improvements could be implemented, so the road layouts will remain the same, and accidents will still keep happening until more streets are pedestrianised. This is a problem with many historic cities such as York, Oxford and Edinburgh.

This is a short outline of collision sites in Bath. Please contact us if you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
