Remember – Each driving course is totally bespoke to your own specific needs and requirements. This applies to both our business and private client courses.
With our advanced driving courses in West Sussex, we try and cover as many roads and routes as possible to ensure a driver has the very best learning experience possible.
For clients in the northeast of the county near Crawley, we can provide training on the M23, up onto the M25 for motorway training; the A22 and A23 are very good roads for faster rural road training, as they have a lot of routes that lead onto challenging B-roads in the county, where advanced techniques such as the limit point can be introduced and practised. For clients in the west of the county, we can head out onto the A3 (M), and also other roads such as the A27 and more rural B roads.
During a session, we typically look at:
- Observation and awareness of the driving environment
- Becoming more speed aware
- Developing an improved attitude towards motoring
- How to become a more skilful driver on all types of roads
- Car control (looking at gears, steering, use of signals)
- Coping and defusing with road rage
- Manoeuvres and driving in restricted areas

Road Safety Risks and Information – West Sussex
West Sussex only has one dedicated motorway, the M23, located near Crawley and is linked via the A23. Several other fast A road routes exist, including the A272, the A280 and the A27. As with most of the fast A road routes across the UK, all are littered with crash sites, and extra care should be taken when using roads that you are unfamiliar with.
The M23 begins at Pease Pottage to the north of West Sussex and joins the huge junction of the M25 North Orbital Motorway surrounding the Capital. Numerous crash sites between junctions 11 and 9 occur near the exit and entrances to the junction areas. Understanding motorway driving is essential not only for motorway travel but also for driving along fast A roads.
The A624 links to the M23 at Junction 10 as it winds its way across West Sussex to meet the A24 at Warnham, and there are several dangerous spots to be aware of, including the Copthorne Road roundabout and the dual carriageway on Crawley Road. The A24 travels down from Epson right to the coast at Worthing, and this road will see many unfamiliar drivers throughout the summer months and second homeowners escaping the Capital on weekends.
Some of the main hot spots to be aware of are the dual carriageways near Horsham. It is especially hazardous as it crosses The Bar and the crossroad of the A272, with many severe and sometimes fatal collisions involving multiple vehicles. At the Washington Roundabout, where the A24 meets the A283, a very high number of crash sites are noted, and the statistics continue to stay high for the remainder of the road until it meets the A27 on the outskirts of Worthing.
The A72 follows the coast from Portslade East of West Sussex across to Emsworth in the West and includes Chichester, Worthing, and Shoreham by the Sea; this is a reasonably fast road with sections of dual carriageways in parts. There are many severe accident sites, with the junction of the A283 over the River Adur showing relatively high numbers and Upper Brighton Road in Worthing close behind. The A259 follows the coast, and this is littered with accidents very close together all along its route. Accidents that occur on roads along a coast or seafront are sometimes caused by issues related to seafront parking, exiting from driveways onto busy seafront roads, or pedestrians crossing to the beaches, so extra care must be taken in such areas. Unfortunately, children are often more likely to be involved in such accidents. Marine Parade in Worthing and The Esplanade in Bognor Regis are areas to be aware of.
Rural West Sussex is very picturesque but also hazardous in certain areas, such as the B2070 around Rake and Dunford Wood and the A286 between Femhurst and Kingsley Green, with some serious collisions occurring along the routes.
These are only a very brief outline of collision sites in West Sussex. If you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and you’re keen to discover what parts are at higher risk in terms of collisions, please contact us.
