Road Safety Risks and Information – Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire, located between Norfolk and Bedfordshire, is well-served by the M11 and A1 motorways, with numerous fast A roads linking the cities and towns of Cambridge, Ely, Huntingdon, and Wisbech. It is also a popular rural destination, particularly with tourists visiting the Norfolk coast during the summer months.
Motorway travel can be stressful for many drivers, and Cambridgeshire has its share of hazardous hotspots. For example, Junction 9 of the A11 at Ickleton, where the motorway splits into the M11 and A11 at Stump Cross, is a high-risk area. Another dangerous junction is where the M11 joins the A603 to the east of Cambridge, at Junction 12. When travelling on the A1 motorway, which merges with the A14 just outside Huntingdon, drivers should be aware of the challenging set of roundabouts connecting the A14, A1, and A141. These junctions have been the site of several severe accidents. Understanding motorway regulations is crucial, particularly if you’re not familiar with them. Many of the A roads throughout the county can also be treacherous, with high-speed stretches in isolated areas. Notably, the A14 between Spaldwick and Thrapston has seen multiple fatal collisions in recent years, and the A10 from Waterbeach to Ely has also been the scene of severe accidents.
In urban areas, although the speed limits are lower, accidents still occur frequently. In Cambridge, for instance, the A603 runs from the M11 into the city center, connecting with numerous minor roads such as Mill Road and Parkside. This area is known for its high-risk of collisions. Hills Road and Regent Street are similarly problematic, with several crashes occurring in these spots. Ely, though smaller than Cambridge, also sees an above-average number of accidents, particularly along Cambridge Road and Lynn Road.
Cambridgeshire’s rural areas, while picturesque, also pose significant driving challenges. Minor roads between Ely, Soham, and Wangford have seen a disturbing number of fatal accidents. The A1307, which runs from Cambridge through Little Abingdon to Haverhill, is another particularly hazardous route, requiring drivers to understand and respect rural driving regulations to reduce risk.
This overview highlights just a few of the many collision hotspots across the county. If you frequently travel specific roads in Cambridgeshire and want to learn more about the higher-risk areas, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
