Road Safety Risks and Information – Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire is set in the east of the UK between Norfolk and Bedfordshire and is served by M11 and A1 motorways with many fast A road routes linking the towns and cities of Cambridge, Ely, Huntingdon and Wisbech. Cambridgeshire is also a popular rural area with quick links to the Norfolk coast and will see more tourism during the summer months.

Motorway travel is stressful for many drivers, and in Cambridgeshire, there are some particularly hazardous accident hot spots, for example, junction 9 of the A11 at Ickleton, where the motorway splits into the M11 and the A11 at Stump Cross. Another high-risk area to be aware of is the joining of the M11 and the A603 to the east of Cambridge, Junction 12. When driving the A1 motorway that merges from the A14 just outside of Huntingdon, there is a challenging set of roundabouts to be aware of that links the A14, the A1 Motorway, and the A141, and statistics show that there have been some severe accidents along those junctions. Understanding motorway regulations can be beneficial, especially if you are unfamiliar with using them often. Many A road routes spread throughout the county also worry some drivers. They can be very fast in isolated areas, such as the A14 between Spaldwick and Thrapston, where several fatal collisions have happened in the past few years. Another troubling area is the A10 from Waterbeach to Ely, where accidents have also been very severe.

The A roads that run into the centre of towns are full of urban accidents, and although the speeds in towns are not as high as on motorways, there have been many severe and fatal accidents. These could have been avoided with better observations. In Cambridge, the A603 runs from the M11 into the retail centre and joins many more minor roads that spread towards the city’s outskirts, such as Mill Road and Parkside. Statistics show that this is a very high-risk area for collisions. Hills Road and Regent Street are also littered with crash sites. In Ely, although relatively small compared to Cambridge, there are more than the average accidents per square mile, which have occurred in the Cambridge Road to Lynn Road areas.

In the many rural areas of beautiful Cambridgeshire, there are some perilous routes, such as the minor routes between Ely, Soham and Wangford, where sadly, many fatal accidents have occurred. The A1307 from Cambridge through Little Abingdon and onto Haverhill is another very hazardous route, so drivers must understand and respect the regulations of rural driving if they intend to travel in the countryside.

These are only a very brief outline of collision sites in the county. If you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested.
